Suspected Robber Killed in Gunfight with BGB in Bandarban
Bandarban, Monday: In the early hours of Monday, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and drug peddlers in the Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban district. The deceased has been identified as Nizam, an alleged robber from Khurushkul union in Cox’s Bazar district.
According to Abdul Mannan, the officer-in-charge of Naikhongchhari police station, the incident occurred around 5 am when a BGB patrol team challenged a group of drug peddlers led by Nizam. The confrontation escalated when the drug peddlers set fire to the BGB’s motorbike.
A gunfight ensued at Morichhaya, near the border, after the drug peddlers opened fire on the BGB, who then retaliated. The exchange of gunfire resulted in Nizam’s death.
The BGB, acting on secret information, conducted a raid during which they seized 98 cartons of Burmese cigarettes and 20,000 yaba pills. The BGB confirmed that one man was injured during the gunfight.
This incident has heightened concerns about the ongoing conflict between law enforcement and drug trafficking groups in the region.
