A demonstration staged by garment workers resulted in significant traffic disruption for over an hour in the Chairmanbari vicinity adjacent to Dhaka’s Mohakhali, according to police reports. The workers, protesting the closure of a local garments factory, temporarily blocked the road, causing delays in regular traffic flow. Despite the workers eventually yielding the road, traffic congestion persisted, requiring additional time for normalization.
Kazi Shahan Haque, the chief of Banani Police Station, disclosed that the protesters, alleging the abrupt shutdown of a garment company named Nepparel, are advocating for overdue salaries and financial assistance. Efforts to alleviate tensions involved engaging with the factory owners, with the protesters relocating from the primary thoroughfare to beneath the Elevated Expressway, where discussions with law enforcement were ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner Ariful Islam Rony of the Traffic Police noted that while the road blockade ceased around 10 a.m., the aftermath of the protest continued to impede traffic flow, extending from Mohakhali to Airport Road. Authorities are actively working to mitigate the residual congestion caused by the demonstration.
